About the Collection:

Blue Period

I recalled over the last year that Picasso had a period in which he painted works with blues and greens after the suicide of his friend and witnessing the disparity of the poor, blind, and socially outcast he encountered in daily life. After experiencing a loss or a tragedy, it changes the way one sees the world. Once rose colored glasses are replaced with blue shades. With grief and unexplainable suffering comes the realization that they will always be there. The world becomes a different color.

Grieving the loss my brother, living through Covid, and reevaluating my beliefs and convictions made me realize I am in a Blue Period of my own. With so much death, change and challenge, I felt it was time to sift through my life and focus on what is essential. Survival mode kicked in. What really matters? Who’s opinions really matter? At the end of the day, will this or that guarantee if I live or die? I have always been a positive person to a fault. I naturally avoid thinking about and dealing with painful, sad or uncomfortable emotions or situations. (If you know the enneagram, I’m a 7 lol) I’ve become aware that I bypassed a lot of healing and assumed I wrestled down my complex views. I’m excited to begin therapy for the first time and excited to dig into some emotions and ways of thinking that I have avoided for so long.

Since my life and my story so far is being excavated, I wanted to show this in my work. I naturally gravitate towards warm colors so what would it be like to work with cool ones? With blues? And not just on canvas but in the music I’ve curated, my hair, nails and clothes. Ironically, I also got a new car that just so happened to be blue. But when it comes painting, I’ve been drawn to the visuals in quilt and tapestry making as a form of story telling. Everything is laid out on a flat plane where perspective doesn’t apply. I’ve decided to take imagery from all of my past works and paint it on raw canvas in blues and greens.
