About the Piece:

As soon as my brother, Gunnar, died, the world just felt different. Not hopeless or doomed but darker. As if a lamp burned out in the corner of your living room. The house still has light but there’s a part of it in a shadow. I couldn’t shake the image of a room full of lights with one “burned out” so this piece came to be. It is the best I can visualize the feeling of losing a brother. All these spirits, lights, suns - I like to call them sols - are still burning but one is gone. My life isn’t over, I know he isn’t gone forever, but it’s the sobering reality that he is no longer on this earth or in this plane of existence. This piece is the simplest image of that grief and a place for it to exist and hold space. My grief deserves honor to make this human experience beautiful. This journey isn’t linear or static, completely light or completely dark. If you have ever lost a loved one, you know it’s just a little less bright.

About the Collection:

The concept for this collection was birthed from the phrase, “The only sure thing in life is death”. As dark as that is, it is true. No matter who we are or what we do or don’t do, we are all going to pass on one day. It is a guarantee in life. It’s a sobering fact that has been forced into my world quite recently. My 19 year old brother passed away in October of 2020 from an accidental overdose. I now find myself and my family in a category that we would never want to be in. Processing and healing through something of nightmares. The strangest part of all of it is that you want things to feel normal again but you don’t want your reality to be the new normal. You don’t want to get used to it and you don’t want to live with it. So this collection is about coming to terms with loss but it’s mostly about soldiering on and the search for other sure things. Birth, growth, life, renewal, release, forgiveness, and strength.
